Inkjet VS. Laser Photo Printers
When digital cameras first hit the market, ink jet printers became very popular. To save time and money, people could now print photos at home or work and they loved it. At that time, laser printers were limited to printing photos on regular printer paper so the results were not significantly different from those printed with an ink jet printer. This is no longer true and laser photo printers are increasing in popularity. Each printer does work best with special paper so that needs to be looked at also.
Ink jet Photo Printers use liquid ink. As the page passes through the printer, this liquid ink is sprayed on to the page. As the ink moves through the cartridge, it is heated to some extent. A bubble forms when this happens. The bubble is what actually passes through the print head and then sprays out of the print nozzle. This bubble is no bigger than the width of a piece of human hair. These droplets form dots as they touch the page and the dots join together to form text and images.
Ink jet paper is designed to absorb this ink. If this type of paper is used with a laser photo printer, the heat produced by the printer could damage both the ink jet paper and the printer. Furthermore, it may also smear, smudge or otherwise damage the print.
Laser Photo Printers use powered ink rather than liquid ink. This powdered ink is called toner and bonds to the paper using pressure and heat. Inside the printer, one will find an electrically charged printing drum. The drum attracts toner powder and, in doing so, forms specific patterns. These patterns form the text and images. As the paper moves over the drum, toner is transferred to the paper. Finally the paper will move through a set of rollers. The rollers pressure and heat the photo paper. This results in the bonding of the toner to the paper.
Laser photo paper does not have the coating seen on ink jet paper. This makes it significantly different from paper used at photo processing centers. The technology is quickly advancing though so laser photo printers will improve and the quality of prints will be similar to that seen with ink jet versions.
Laser printers typically are faster than their ink jet counterparts although that is not always the case. In contrast, ink jet printers tend to produce better photos. This may change though as mentioned above. Only you can determine which you prefer.
